Support, educate, and empower students
by providing them with the opportunity to become
effective thinkers, learners, and writers.
Writing Centre instructors assist students from all disciplines in developing their own critical thinking, writing, and self-editing practices. Instructors provide the environment for students to help themselves by emphasizing writing as a process that requires planning, critical reflection, and practice. Students can apply the strategies they learn in their appointments, whether they are within Writing Centre programs or appointments, in their classes, other academic work and, indeed, beyond the academic arena.
"The Writing Centre is a great resource for students. Each time I've taken a paper to the Writing Centre, I've received a 10-15% boost in marks."
(StFX student's comment in 2008 Globe and Mail University Report)
The Writing Centre provides one-to-one appointments throughout the year to StFX students who want professional Writing Centre instructors to assist them in their academic writing. The Writing Centre’s one-to-one appointments are free to any StFX student; however, appointments should be booked in advance by calling the Writing Centre at 867-5221.
Writing Centre instructors assist students from all disciplines in developing their own critical thinking, writing, and self-editing practices. Instructors provide the environment for students to help themselves by emphasizing that writing is a process that requires planning, critical reflection, and plenty of editing time.
Students are encouraged to make appointments at any stage in the writing process from the initial organization to final revisions. Students can apply these strategies in and beyond the academic arena.
The Writing Centre has established three classroom programs: Learning English for Academic Purposes, LEAP, is a program for students whose first language is not English; Academic Program of Excellence at X, APEX, is a mandatory program for students on academic penalty; and eXcel is an optional, non-credit course for first-year students that eases the transition from high school to university. All programs are complemented by one-to-one appointments, which are the focus of the Writing Centre’s work.
