Heaps Chair Position

The principal objective of the Alley Heaps Chair of Computing Science is to provide funding for the support, exploration, and advancement of computing science at St. Francis Xavier University. Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Alley Heaps Chair Professor of Computing Science. The successful candidate will be internationally recognized for research, and will benefit students and faculty members, as well as the wider community, with insights into new developments in computing science.

An endowment fund of approximately $1 million created the Dr. H. Stanley and Doreen Alley Heaps Chair in Computing Science at St. Francis Xavier University (StFX). Please see the news webpage at: http://sites.stfx.ca/mscs/gift.

The principal objective of the Dr. H. Stanley and Doreen Alley Heaps Chair in Computing Science is to provide sustained funding for the support, exploration and advancement of computing science at StFX. Scholarships and summer internships are available to computing science students, and funding for faculty or visitors is available for the scholarly pursuit of computing science. The funding for faculty or visitors leads to appointment as Alley Heaps Associate, or Alley Heaps Chair Professor. It is the aim of the Heaps Chair program that the opportunity be made available annually. Nominations and applications are invited for the position of Alley Heaps Chair Professor of Computing Science. The successful candidate will be internationally recognized for research, and will benefit students and faculty members, as well as the wider community, with insights into new developments in computing science.    

Alley Heaps Chair Professor

The aim of the Chair regarding the scholarly pursuit of computing science is as follows:

“The Chair will support both pure basic research and new and significant applications.  It will also be concerned with the management of technological change for the benefit of society as a whole, and not be concerned with technological change whose aim is financial gain for certain distinct sectors of that society.”

The qualification for this Professorship is described in “Eminent scholars from outside of StFX, currently active in the field, could be nominated for a grant as the Alley Heaps Chair Professor for short periods (2-4 months).”

The visiting Alley Heaps Chair Professor is expected to interact with faculty and students. The position has associated budget for salary, fringe benefits, relocation expenses, and other incidental expenses.

Appointment procedure for the Alley Heaps Chair Professor includes nomination of scholars and a review of nomination by a special committee. Nominations are now invited; selection will begin on March 27, 2013.
