Biofilms Unit

The Biofilms team is led by Dr. David Pink. The focus of this research group is to conduct experimental studies of bacterial biofilms at the micron (1 micrometer) scale, in order to understand the characteristics of these biofilms and to develop techniques to map their structure - create and validate mathematical models and computer codes that simulate biofilms. The intent is that this knowledge will contribute to manipulating and controlling biofilms. One of the problems being addressed by this research is bacterially-induced pipeline corrosion.

Dr. Truis Smith-Palmer of StFX's Chemistry Department, is also a principal investigator in the experimental work.

This project is underway with the selection and purchase of sophisticated equipment for the experimental work, other ramping-up activities, and commencement of the experimental work and modeling.
